RED BULL WHEN HE SAW HIS FIRST LIGHT

an old photo I found of RED BULL on the morning he was born. He came a bit earlier than we expected but was a pleasant and delightful surprise. At first BIG MAMA (B05-097), his dam, didn't want to let him suckle since her udder was very full, swolen and sore and she would kick the young man away whenever he came too close.

We tied her up in the crush and let him try and drink from her but that didn't work that well either... on the second day we milked her out and bottlefed RED BULL with all the cholostrum. Once her udder was emtpy and relieved from the pain she allowed RED BULL to drink from her.

For the next few days she was 'highly beding-esd' and no one could get close to RED BULL, but eventually she settled down when she realized we were no threat to her calf.

RED BULL (DLV 08-02) is our first Boran Calf born on the farm, 12 Sep 2008 from his prolific embryo producing mom, B05-097 and sired by B05-098 from Boran Genetics, the bull Simon has closed for the next two years to keep exclusivity. Adriaan Rall from SA Boran Society reckons it is the perfect Boran Bull.

RED BULL will be a very muscular and long bull with a brood back. His dam is from the Boran milk line, 3094 - this is evident when you see how well RED BULL has grown up to now.

27 Jan 2009:

Princess (B05-113) gives birth to a beautiful heifer from the 'closed bull', B05-098 who also sired our pride, young RED BULL. Since Princess decided to give birth early in the evening, the whole family mangaged to witness the event. The boys found it astonishing that a calf can come out of a cows 'you-know-what'. We were over the moon to be blessed with another heifer calf and decided to call her 'gift', but don't know which language to use yet.

26 January 2009:

Diva's little Angel was born during the night. Diva is very, very protective of her calf and I dare not come too close. Later in the day she hid her calf so well that it took us a few hours to find it. Angel was lying dead still under a thorn tree, not making a noise.
